New alert for homeowners warns of unnecessary offers
VIDEO: New alert for homeowners warns of unnecessary offers.
This clip on Good Morning America is about those “Local Records Office” solicitations that so many of our residents have questions about. They mention an Illinois County Recorder, where it seems records can be had for free, so if you share this (please do!), make sure to note that Indiana Recorders have to charge $1 per page.
(Recorders, please note: Regardless of our personal opinions
, we must be careful to refrain from calling these solicitations “scams” or otherwise claiming they are illegal or fraudulent. This has been through the courts in Indiana
, and it is currently lawful for them to continue their business, as long as they adhere to agreed-upon requirements and restrictions.)

CONFERENCE POSTPONED
Due to the rapid spreading of the novel coronavirus, our annual Spring Recorders Conference is to be postponed and rescheduled. We are looking at August 18-20. Check back for updates. The Indiana State Board of Accounts has sent the following letter to all Indiana Recorders:
Recorders,
As you are aware the Coronavirus (COVID-19) is starting to have an impact on governmental activities. Through discussions with the Recorders Association we realized that there is some hesitation on coming to Indianapolis for the Recorders Conference April 14th – 16th. The State Examiner understands those concerns and has decided to allow the meeting to be postponed to a later date. The association has been hard at work coordinating with the downtown Hilton and we have rescheduled the Recorders Conference for Tuesday, August 18th through Thursday, August 20th.
Per the association the Hilton has agreed to move the conference at no penalty to the association or individual recorders who may have already booked their room. If you have already booked your room the reservations will automatically cancel with no charges to your credit card. Starting April 1st you will be able to call the Hilton to reserve rooms for the rescheduled meeting.
If you have questions do not hesitate to contact us at counties@sboa.in.gov
